The Tibetan Institute & Library
Program for December 2011

The TIL is thankful to the friends who have renewed their membership and wishes to encourage those who have not sent it yet to do so. Your financial support will enable us to continue hosting Dharma teachings by highly qualified Tibetan Lamas and extend our programs. Thanks to your support the TIL was able to invite the Ven. Geshe Lhakdor, Director Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, to offer precious teachings to our local Buddhist community and university students early this year. Membership fee to the TIL is $25 per year. Membership fee for those who became members in or after April of this year, the prorated fee is $12.50. Please, bring your membership fee to our meeting this month or mail a check payable to TheTibetan Institute & Library, Inc. to: The Tibetan Institute & Library, P.O. Box 140117, Coral Gables, Fl 33114.

The Tibetan Institute & Library is pleased to introduce our new program with the introduction of Tibetan Tantric Yoga classes, as taught by Dr. Pasang Y. Arya during his recent visit. This class will be conducted by Raul Romero, who has been studying under Dr. Arya for the last two years.
The Tibetan Tantric Yoga is a practice that has been done by Indian and Tibetan yogis for centuries. It is not like yoga usually practiced in the West. It is a practice of rLung (psychic wind) and exercise of the mind purely based on spiritual development, which was laid down by the tantric tradition of Master Pundit Naropa and later masters. The exercise removes negative energies from the channels - chakras by physical positions-movements which harmonize wind & mind and release inner stress. Practitioners may tame the wind, develop spiritual experience and be able to control their mind - emotions. This yoga basically helps stimulate the channels & chakras, purifies body/mind and promotes health.

Thursday, December 8
7:00 to 7:45 pm - Tibetan Tantric Yoga Class
8:00 to 9:30 pm - Medicine Buddha Sadhana Meditation, Mantra Recitation and Silent Single Pointed Calm Abiding (Shamata) Meditation. Both programs are offered Free.

Tibetan Medicine.
Tibetan Medicine is a very ancient medical system based on Buddhist philosophy and psychology. It explains that everything existing or non-existing in the world derives from the mind and the five elements. The mind is considered to be the base because all existences and moments depend on its movements; it is the creator of every external and internal phenomena. The mind and the five elements manifest themselves in the form of energy and gross materials into three aspects: body, energy and mind, which, in the human body, are reflected in the form of three humors or energies called Wind (tib: rLung), Bile (mKhrispa, pronunciation: Tripa) and Phlegm (Badken). These humors, or principles, are the quintessence of the energy that constantly flows in the human body and sustains the health with mental awareness. The three principles give positive health when they are in equilibrium and harmony, and bring ill health when the balance between them is lost. This is the central concept of the general theory, etiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of the body/mind in Tibetan Medicine. It is through the gradation of the energy of mind, humors and physical constructions that the framework of the theory and practice of Tibetan Medicine is established.

Consultations will be given the 7Th of August from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

·         Losar Tashi Delek!  Tibetan New Year (March 5, 2011) Year 2138 Year of the Iron Hare. Losar is the name of the Tibetan New Year, the most significant festival for Tibetan people. In the Tibetan language, “Lo” means “Year” and “Sar” means “New”. The Losar festival pre-dates Buddhism in Tibet and goes back to the time when the Bon religion held sway in that country. In those days, incense was burned every winter in purification rituals used to placate the gods. As irrigation, cultivation, and refinement techniques were introduced, Losar ceremonies became more celebratory, as a gesture of thanks to the gods for the budding innovations. Eventually with the advent of rudimentary astrology, Losar became more than a farmer’s festival, finally mutating into a Buddhist festival, celebrating the New Year.
Some of the current day celebrations and customs include:

* The last day of the year is a time to clean and prepare for the approaching New   Year! In the monasteries, the finest decorations are put up and elaborate offerings are made.

* From the first day of Tibetan New Year Festival (Mar. 5, 2011), large scale of Blessing Ceremony will be held in the monasteries across Lhasa. Monks perform special rituals evoking protective deities and clean and decorate the monasteries. The first day of Losar is a day of elaborate ceremonies, including dances and recitations of Buddhist teachings. The remaining two days are for a more secular festival. On the third day, old prayer flags are replaced with new ones.

*Dressed in their year best, every household treats their guests with the upmost honor and hospitality.
